  • What's the difference between counselling and psychology?

A fair question that can make the mind boggle.

Social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors. Which cook will be best placed in my kitchen of emotions ?

Psychologists are trained in the science of how people think, feel, behave and learn, typically focusing more on diagnosis. Often psychology is facilitated through a more medical and behaviouralist lens.

Counsellors (such as me), adopt a super person-centred approach. Counsellors learn the nitty-gritty of listening and responding to individuals. A decent counsellor strives to make your unconscious, conscious. In Australia, counsellors and psychotherapists cannot provide a medicare rebate.

If you’re keen to discuss fees please reach out to me via the contact section.

  • Do I need a mental health care plan?

One of the upshots of my service is you do not need a mental health care plan or a referral from your GP. You can self-refer by reaching out to me in the contact section.

I fully understand that navigating mental health can feel a wee bit daunting at first.

I offer free fifteen minute phone consults to make sure you have the insight you need to inform your choice.

You are welcome to email me ahead of your first session should you have any further questions about the process.

  • I have never talked about my feelings. What should I expect?

As both a mental health counsellor and advocate, I uphold a relaxed and casual approach to therapy that cuts through the clinical fluff.

In our first session, I’ll foster a safe space whilst honouring your journey so far. It is likely your session will consist of connection, humour and deep curiosity.

If opting for Zoom Counselling, I recommend that people prepare for their sessions by finding a relaxed, private space. Never hurts to brew a nice cup of tea or coffee beforehand too; some people even have their pooch or cat nearby for extra comfort.

For online video chats, you will need a stable internet connection, a working microphone and webcam capabilities. Zoom can be used via web browser, for Skype you will need an account.

Keen on a phone session? Make sure you have a working mobile or landline (I will phone you directly at the time of your session).

  • Do you work with teenagers?

I work with young people aged 16+ on a case by case basis.

If there’s a young person in your life that needs a little extra help right now, feel free to email me directly via bree.mentalhealth@gmail.com
